DescriptionCHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY Warehouse is where goods and commodities are kept for further clearance. Narrowing it to Nigeria Ports Authority, there are many warehouses where imported consignment and goods are stored. This is cleared by carrying the billing papers from post to post, waiting and wasting much time in seeing who is in charge. Goods that takes about two weeks to berth into the country takes another two weeks to get cleared. This makes the importers and the clearing agents to run from port to port, in search of where the goods were kept. The introduction of computer in warehousing will enable importers know which and where their goods are kept, as it will always be stipulates on the bill of laden papers. Computer is hereby seen as a way of handling, by systematically organizing them, recording or making notations on them, following up with the appropriate action or the like. 1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM The processing of billing papers for clearance of goods, with manual method has led to omission of many records that ought to be included. This is caused by inaccuracy of the manual billing process. Due to the inefficiency in manual billing process, billing papers are carried from post to post, waiting for who is in charge, thereby delaying the goods that suppose to be delivered. More so, goods are not delivered on time, due to the fact, that goods that takes about two weeks to get into the country, still takes another two weeks to be cleared. 1.3 AIM AND OBJECTIVE OF STUDY The purpose of this is study is to 1. Identify those problems caused by using manual billing clearance 2. Finding out the effect of this in Nigeria Ports Authority 3. Create computer awareness 4. Identify prospects for solution of problems. 1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY This research, base on the problem and prospect of using computer in Nigeria Ports Authority, will help to develop interest towards computer. The findings of this research will also help the management to increase the income generation of Nigeria Ports Authority and smooth running of the warehouse in general. 1.5 SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY The researcher will identify all the problems, including the financial constraints of the problems, encounter with the use of manual billing clearance in warehousing. LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY Due to the financial constraints of the researcher and lack of time, the researcher is concentrating the study in only Nigeria Ports Authority Lagos. 1.7 DEFINITION OF TERMS GOOD- Goods carried in a ship TONNAGE- A measure of the capacity of a ship (1 ton = 100 cubic feet) PORT- A place where ship load and unload goods shattered form storms. This is to say, the operation which involves the production, transaction, customer registration stock system and balancing of account were carried out manually. And without any doubt this manual method of operation is very slow unreliable of operation is very and prone to error and mistakes. In view of this, several attempt and efforts have been made by various organization as well as higher institution of learning on developing or more formidable in every day application of new technology in over day to day activities. In March, 1995 a student of secretariat administration of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin carried out a research project on the ?IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY ON THE OFFICE?. A project which deal elaborately on the application of machines such as photocopier, typewriter etc. the effective running of an organization. In December 2000 a student of accounting at the Kwara State College of Education, Ilorin, carried out research project on a ?DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM FOR A MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY?. Project work covers aspect such as production sectors, sales and accounting sector of the organization, but using a manual approach and decision making for a manufacturing industry. In view of this, therefore, I declared to build it at and improve the previous attempt made by others in the application of technology and a decision, support through application on a specific computer programming language in ?DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM FOR A MANUFACTURING SYSTEM? A case study of International Tobacco Company Plc Ilorin. 1.2 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES The fact that the exiting system holds a great deal of stock and balance of account that no one including the management wents. And most of the mistakes is stock system customer registration and balance of account cannot be corrected within a year of it eventually postponed this delays some certain decision to be taken by the management of the company. Thus, there is need for reform in the decision support system used by the company. Decision Support System is an interactive system that Support Decision Making Increase sales and can be used in solving users problems. The overall objectives of the decision support system is to support decision making and giving a correct customer registration and stock system so that combined lost, cost of holding stock and stock put cost are at a minimum level. This is done by establishing the following factors how to prepare how the customer registration and stock system report, how to record credit sales how to give total turn over allowance and withdraws of goods from stocks and to when release goods. It becomes tedious and complex when it is done manually. This is a reason why it is felt the present system should by analyze either feasible considered. The project will be carried out in a way to have up to one objective which are listed below, so that it acts as guidance for the project work. 1. To describe the exiting system and to find a formidable solution to their various problem envisage in the system. 2. Go as much as possible eradicable various manual processes that are reparative. 3. To improve the updating modification and presentation of the various report needed. 1.3 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY Decision reports system is the operation of continuous decision, making is giving out to the customer so that the stock system are adequate to support the current role of demands with due regards to the economy. Generally, since the advent to computer in the world the general awareness of its potential capacity as a useful tools, has grown steadily, this development has manifested itself in several ways and different forms. Today, computer turn up almost every where and eventually there is no human activity which is not found useful. Since most business are faced with large volume of data to process and most of these data used to be processed, quickly and accurately in order to give useful information to the officer concern and which will be used in decision making for instance, if a supervisor officers needs to know how money have been received, how much is spent on salaries and at the same time, how many goods are in stocks. Computer performs operation with high speed processed information with accurate efficiency and reduces the paper work and sitting cost. And this facts goes a long way in increasing the patronage, profit and reduces the losses and the production. 1.4 METHODOLOGY Before collection of any data at all, its is very important to know exact what the collection is all about. One must therefore establish whether data would be collected from the whole population of part of the phenomena above which the information can be collected. In this project, however the sample where the information is supposed to be collected is International Tobacco Company Plc Ilorin However, looking at the number of the location company throughout the entire nation, one would discover that it would difficult for a researcher to collect information from the manufacturing location to get accurate information. Therefore, the sampling technique is employed and as sample is selected on the basis of rational thinking. Fro the purpose of this study, the Head of Office of International Tobacco Company Plc Ilorin is taken into consideration. The concerned officers of the Company were interviewed and conclusion through these interviewed and observation, the researcher arrived at the sub segment conclusion. 1.5 SCOPE AND LIMITATION The day to day decision made by the stock system of account controller determines in a very directory way the investment in stocks and services offered to customer. Thus the scope of the study focuses its attention on the customer registration and stock system department of the company. The department which have a great impact in decision making and the system involves the following process: ? Assessing the number of goods to be supplied to customer. ? Deciding the extent of goods be held in stock daily. ? Regulating the number of goods produced in one factory/ ? Regulating the issue of stock from the store. Although this project work is done under the thorough supervision and proper research to achieve the aims of easing the problems of data entry processing of customer order in International Tobacco Company Plc, Ilorin. It is only limited to the Head Office alone, however it can be further developed enter for networking system, though it caters for relate calculation but this varies depending on the rate. However, it can still be expended on further improvement. 1.6 ORGANIZATION OF THE REPORT The study which is on decision support system for a manufacturing firm covers a vital aspect. Apart from the certification, dedication, acknowledgment, abstract the project work consist of five broad chapters. The first chapter is the introduction, which covers areas such as aims and objective significance of the study methodology, scope and limitation and organization current state of the act of the company. The second chapter is on literature review, which deal elaborately on the case study historical background company technical terms and computerization current state of the art of the company. The third chapter of study deals explicitly on the analysis of the existing system, description of current procedure, problems of existing system, description of proposed system and advantages of the proposed system of the company. The fourth chapter focuses on the explanation of design of the system implementation on the system and documentation on the system. The last chapter of the study is the summary and conclusion and it also covers areas such as recommendation experience gained and reference for the efficiency of the research work. Besides the appendix system flowchart program flowchart sources program listings and computer outputs were also designed at the end of the project work. ? One of the most important characteristics of a computer is its ability to store and process information. This ability of computer is all achieved through programming. In the world today, application software has been assisting various organizations in carrying out their operations successfully and reliably. Manual examination recording has been a problem to many institutions of higher learning like Kogi State Polytechnics, Lokoja using Computer Science Department as a sample for the research work. The effort made so far towards overcoming this problem by the manual system have been sabotage by error and abuse of different kinds, this and many other difficulties involved have prompted a curious attention towards Computerization of student examination result system at a every level of education, because it reduce cost and time, increase accessibility of information on students examination and proper recording.ABSTRACT The problem which always emanate from inadequate personnel information maintenance and management has been a torn in the flesh of the entire Nigerian society, Enugu state precisely. In other to proffer solution to the existing problems, the project work researched into the modus operandi of personnel database management system of Enugu state. In the process of analysis of the existing system were detected, carefully analyzed and possible solution to the problems were proffered in the newly designed system. The new system designed in this project work is computerized and it works automatically; it addresses all the lapses that cause hindrance to the existing system. It is timely accurate and very comprehensive in report generation.ABSTRACT E-mail as ten uses platform is more of conversational than traditional paper communication is. In this project, design and assimilation of ten users E-mail platform, it is absolutely essential to make everything completely clear unambiguous because the targeted audience may not have a chance to ask for clarification, with ten E-mail platform recipient can ask question immediately. This ten users E-mail platform is implementing using vb.net embedded into java making it easier to access it online. Thus, E-mail platform is different from both our speech and our paper composition; it is a particular platform of Electronic mail that allows ten users only.

Technological development through the years has enabled us to do things with less effort new development in computer technology has allowed us to expense our capabilities. This is also applicable to our learning system. Student at all levels of learning (i.e. primary, secondary and tertiary institutions) are expected to see their performance in classroom, exercises and examinations are carried out at the end of each term (semester) to enable grade performance monitoring and keep record for decision-making based on the instructions (school?s policy) Grading of performance is needed to measure the level of understanding of lectures, lessons and the ability to accommodate accordingly; decision such as knowing the record of the highest student down to the lowest student in sequential order and to enable processing of result. Normally, the examination recording involves arithmetic manipulations which are presently handled manually. Since this operation involves human operations problem arise from errors as a result of imperfection and inaccuracy, show speed, insecurity as well as high expenses are bound to exist. In Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja which is the pivot of this research, a general application package (i.e. Microsoft excels) is use in result compilation and recording. However, it is observed that some short comings are still exhibited by the package owing to the fact that development is for general purpose applications. It involves about 80% manual and 20% computerization. In the course of this research, a verbal discussion and examination recording revealed that a lot of time and human efforts are being wasted at the operation end of every semester result compilation. This makes the result recording a tedious and boring venture. 1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Result recording and compilation in Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja is associated with various problems. This project is step towards identifying this problem, which is likely to militate against god decision-making in the institution and ways to alleviate the burden associated with the existing system. The head of department of various schools in the institution are involved in result recording of students in their departments. With the growing number of student in this institution, the need for comprehensive evaluation of each student performance, the existing system in use becomes so complex and tedious that the hands involved can no longer cope with the task at hand as such, the following problems are identified:- a. Delay in recording exams result and decision making. b. Poor security to data and information, hence giving room to illegal access to information. c. Incorrect data entry giving rise to wrong information resulting in wrong decision making. d. Inaccurate record keeping (on academics). e. It becomes expensive involving too many hands. 1.3 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES The main aim of this study is to create a program that will allow for easy examination i.e. result recording system in the institution (i.e. Kogi State Polytechnics); it shall:- a. Study and identify the limitation of the existing system. b. Determine the deficiency in the package and hardware being used. c. Reducing time and labour required in the existing system. d. Facilitate accuracy and data security during and after recording. e. Reduce to minimum or eliminate entirely, the problems encountered during updating of examination recorded. The main objectives of this research work is to determine what the meaning of examination is and to develop a computer program using visual basic that could be used for documentation of examination result recording. 1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY The under-listed are the significance of the proposed system: a. Increase speed in result recording system thereby allowing for timely protection of exams record and taking of decision by management. b. Eliminate drudgery (irrelevancy). c. Reduce cost involvement and improved skill of the users. d. As much as have to receive adequate welfare and entitlements the personnel database must be maintain effectively. The personnel database is the comprehensive information update of employees under a particular employee at a particular time. The maintenance and management of employee information has bee a big problem in the Nigerian society workers denied of their primary and secondary entitlements and the most sad aspect of inadequacy in the maintenance of employee information is the erupt of ghost workers syndrome, this has the greatest thing this laxity in personal database system has caused in the society. The problem of promotion is also on offspring of inadequate personnel database management; who to promote when there is necessity for promotion is always the problem faced by personnel officers in change of promotion exercise. Workers have suffered a lot under this error of ignorance and sheet wickedness in every activity work of life, the first thing to be observed is always information about the staff involved. This helps to give out desired incentives for the works, to help them put in their best in their work the non-payment of salary or in some cases, the delay in payment of salary is always caused by the problems associated with personnel database. This work researched into the operational activities of existing system of maintaining personnel database in Enugu state with a view to detecting and solving the problems making it not to work out smoothly. 1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM The problem caused by poor management and maintenance of personnel database in Enugu state is numerous. Th procrastination in payment of workers salary is a work force badly. Because of the fact that act information of worker s in the state is not known the state faces the problem of how to provide incentives for its worker. A lot of public money is been diverted into private purses due to the problem of poor information management concerning personnel records. ? 1.3 PURPOSE OF STUDY The main purpose of this study is to provide ever lasting solution to the current problems facing the Enugu state personnel database maintenance system through a well computerized design. 1.4 AIM/OBJECTIVES OF STUDY The primary aim of this work is to make sure that personnel database management system of EnuguState is to serve the citizen better by producing a new computerized system that will tackle the problems currently facing it. This linkage is often referred to as convergence is risen which is driven by technology and amplified by business trends, the business technology foster growth in network system that uses e-mail links to connect sub-soldiery system (nodes) which may send, receive, direct and redirect information to and fro, sender and receiver. Talking of the internet e-mail couple of years ago would have sound-link a fair table but today the internet is pervasive in almost every field of human and earn our changing the fundamentals of how they are conducted nation-wide as well as international business. Few years of existence, the internet ten e-mail platform has shown that it can silver the long sought after goal of electronic commerce. This technology facilitate link ten e-mail with rainbow.net LTD web and services delivery as well as in reducing barriers to entry into information world. Internet e-mail allows clients of ten user transaction relationship, which would have taken long distance travel or movement of information with the attendant, with the on-line e-mail information at your convenience at home and at any time, e-mail user can transact business and contact other people. This new system will provide e-mail address to ten users. 1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM E-mail as a business communication mechanism has many inherent flaws; ? It?s totally insecure Confidential business document sent over e-mail are not confidential. This document can be read both inside and outside of your organization. ? It?s too open Mailboxes are filled with junk mail, and the situation is getting worse every month. Due to the inherent general delivery design of e-mail, this problem cannot be prevented, even with the best designed e-mail filters. ? E-mail can be dangerous Computer virus are most commonly delivered through e-mail because there is no certification mechanism for e-mail senders, in Microsoft outlook, just clicking on an e-mail can initiate a new virus. ? Delivery is not guaranteed Just like postal mail, e-mail may be delivered, or maybe not The recent example include: Harvard acceptance letter that were deleted by AOL, thinking they were junk mail ? It lacks ubiquitous Access It is problematic for most users to access their e-mail from all locations, such as at home or while on the road. This is the primary reason why web-based e-mail became popular. 1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY The objectives of the study are stated below: i. To investigate the lack of the current automates system in term of modern technology appliances that support internet e-mail services and suggest ways of updating them. ii. To design a friendly web-site services provided by the ten e-mail platform iii. To improve in the speed effectiveness, efficiency and conferences in information technology (IT). iv. To carry out a feasibility study on the organization for the purpose of installing an online e-mail. v. To design and assign computer software to solve the problem. 1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY This project work - ten e-mail user will enhance secured validation process which allow user or customer?s to operate on ten different e-mail account on a single application and able to send mail and receive mail from any of the account at a time.
