Abstract

This project looks at the Health and nutritional problems associated with food allergy in Doko Lavun Lga Niger state. The study was centred on the health and nutritional problems associated with food allergy among residents in Doko, Lavun Local Government Area of Niger State as a case study. A five-point Likert scaled questionnaire was administered to collect data or information on the socio-economic and demographic background, food habit list of the respondents including a list demanding for options on the effects of allergy on the meal pattern, the health problems associated with food allergy, the group of people most affected in the society and possible ways of preventing allergic reactions to food. Data obtained from the study were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Moreso, a 5 points Likert scale was used to rate their responses on each opinion. Furthermore, the analysis carried out on the study shows that 45.2% were within the age range of 21 and above while 28.6% ranged between 10– 20. The study shows further that 57.3% had non-formal education and 9.5% for the tertiary education graduates. From the study, it was seen that legumes, eggs, Ogiri and cold weather were the major foods that triggers allergic reactions. This was noted by the remark given ‘satisfied’ which connotes an agreement to an opinion. The health and nutritional problems commonly associated and experienced after consuming the above-listed items were runny nose, diarrhea and other diverse respiratory disorders. These nutritional problems were seen to have effects on the meal pattern of the respondents such as poor nutrition and selective feeding etc. It was obvious that the effects and negative impacts were identified more in some groups of individuals such as the women (pregnant and lactating), children and the aged.
