Abstract

This research work is on Missionary enterprise and the development of Ikwo economy an appraisal of the Norwegian Church Agriculture Project (NORCAP). The pacification of Ikwo territory in 1905-1906 resulted in the coming of the Christian Missionaries in 1936 who established the Norwegian Church Agricultural Project (NORCAP) in 1962. Initially, subsistence farming system dominated Ikwo clan up to the middle of 1900 when the influx of the Norwegian Church Agriculturalists introduced a new farming system that replaced the old subsistence farming system. This marked the beginning of mechanization and agricultural industries in Ikwo, it led to the introduction of fertilizer chemical, crop trial and seed/plant multiplication, community group farms, cooperatives, training and re-training of farmers, expatriates services, animal husbandry services, nutritional services, social services and recreational services. This project work is an attempt to appraise the impact of NORCAP on the development of Ikwo economy. It shall rely on primary and secondary sources to analyze events of the missionaries in Ikwo historical perspective.
