Abstract

Caesarean section (CS) is a surgical procedure in which one or more incisions are made through a mother’s abdomen (laparotomy) and uterus (hysterotomy) to deliver one or more babies or to remove a dead fetus. According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2015), it is the most common abdominal surgical procedure performed around the world. This study was done to examine the perception and attitude of women of childbearing age in Ede South Local Government Area about C/S. A descriptive study design was used. The target population for this study was women of childbearing age attending ante-natal clinics in the study location. A multistage sampling method was used for this study. Questionnaires served as the instrument for data collection. A total number of 338 questionnaires were distributed, however, 336 were retrieved and valid for the analysis, which represents 99.4%. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 23. On age, 21.5% were 15-24 years, while 63.1% were aged 25-34 years. Also, 48.2% were Christian, 46.4% were Muslims while 5.4% were traditional worshippers. More so, a few (12.8%) of the respondents were single, while the majority (86.6%) were married and only two (0.6%) were divorced. Most (61.3%) of the respondents were from Yoruba ethnicity, 5.4% were from Hausa ethnicity, 23.2% were from Igbo ethnicity, while 10.1% were from other minor ethnicities such as Edo, Egede, Igala among others. It became necessary to conduct this study seeing the rate at which pregnant women who can only be delivered through Caesarean Section declined the offer. This study concluded that the level of knowledge of pregnant women is inadequate, while perception and attitude towards CS are also negative..
