Description

Abstract

The provision of safe drinking water is an important health priority for any community. A lot of diseases seen in developing countries are as a result of the consumption of contaminated water. The concentrations of six heavy metals Cadmium, Copper, Nickel, Chromium, Lead and Cobalt were determined from five sachet water samples sold in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State to assess their quality. The samples were also subjected to physical, chemical and biological analysis. These analyses were carried out using standard methods. The results of the heavy metals analysis obtained showed that Cobalt had the highest values in Salfatein (0.1589±±0.00)  Fido(0.1496±±0.00)  Ebimo(0.1488±0.00)  Conta (0.1405±0.00)  Lead(0.1341±0.00) which was higher than the ATSDR permissible limit for Cobalt of 0.002ppm while the lowest values were observed for Cadmium in Salfatein (0.0016±0.00)  Ayalla(0.0011±0.00)  Ebimo(0.0010±0.00)  Fido(0.0002±0.00)  Conta(0.0001±0.00) which was below the WHO permissible limit for Cadmium of 0.003ppm. The values of Chromium recorded in these samples were also higher than the WHO permissible limit of 0.05ppm with two samples recording Lead concentrations above the WHO permissible limit of 0.01ppm.
