Abstract

This project looks at Strategies for reducing malnutrition amongst children. The main purpose of this study is to find out strategies for reducing malnutrition amongst the children of Birnin Gwari, Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State. Adequate nutrition and balanced diet are vital for good health and well-being. Food provides the body’s needed energy, protein, essential fats, vitamins and minerals for life, growth and function properly-which reduces kwashiorkor and marasmus. The strategies for reducing malnutrition in children range from Health Education to mothers, preparing of balanced and adequate diet, dispatching of enough food for malnourished children e t c. Structured questionnaire based on the respondents’ demographical data and variables on inadequacies of nutritious food and its effect on health in the study area were used to collect information from forty-five (45) respondents. Simple frequency and percentage were used to analyze the data. The result from the analysis revealed that malnutrition has seriously affected many children in Birnin Gwari, which is due to their lack of inadequate diet, the result shows that 95.5% do not prepare balance food due to poverty and lack of informed consent. It is therefore recommended that government and community members should intensify effort in providing enough nutritional food, house wife’s should also inculcate the habit of preparing the food base on balance and adequate diet and the health care personnel’s should health educate the public on good preparation and hygienic food preparation for proper growth and development.
