Abstract

This project studies The effect of social media on reading culture among students. This study was carried out to investigate the effects of social media on the reading culture among students with a case study of school of industrial and applied sciences, of Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri. The objective of the study is to investigate the purpose why students use social media, to find out the most commonly or mostly used social networking sites, among students and others. The study adopted the survey research design which was employed to derive responses from a sample size of 77 students in the department of library and information science, computer science, fishery technology, across all levels. The result also showed that the most commonly use social networking site is Facebook, followed by WhatsApp. Result also showed that students are faced with the danger of internet addiction& others, in the cause of using social media. From the result, the conclusion was drawn and recommendation was given out to parents, students, school authorities, inventors of social networking sites etc.
