Abstract

This research work was designed to study the impact of staff training and appraisal in public institutions using the Federal Medical Center, Lokoja, Kogi State as a case study. Most organization are reluctant to develop a comprehensive training and development programmes for their employees because they do not see it as their duty. Many of the failures in management development programmes can be attributed to the unsystematic approach to training. The main objective of this research work is to examine if staff training and development contribute greatly to the growth of an organization. The method used in collecting data was mainly primary and secondary techniques and questionnaires were administered to a sample of 100 respondents drawn from the target population. It was discovered from the study that staff training plays a prominent role in staff performance and job productivity in the Federal Medical Centre. From the analysis, training has a positive effect on performance. The following were recommended based on the analysis of data from the Federal Medical Centre there should be a regular budget for staff training every year. If the Federal medical centre wants to improve individual staff performance, there should be training and retraining of staff.
