  • A STUDY ON THE EFFECT OF PROCESSING METHODS ON THE TOXICOLOGICAL COMPONENT OF UKPO MUCUNA SLOANEI)

    ABSTRACT

    Matured Mucuna Sloanei “Ukpo) seeds were sorted cleaned, cracked to expose the cotyledons. The cotyledons were divided into three equal parts. A portion was roasted in hot ash for 50 min while a portion was boiled at 1000c for 30 mins. A raw sample was used as a control. The sample were milled, sieved and package prior to analysis. The flour sample were subjected to anti-nutritional analysis using a standard methods.  The result were statistically analyzed using analysis of varience (ANOVA). The means separated using least significant difference (LSD) at 95% confidence limit. From the results some components  reduced with roasting while other reduced with boiling. Phytate had the higher values (80.41-73.73)% while Alkaloid had the least values (0.58-0.50)%. Thus the combination of dry and wet heat treatment with other pre-processing operations should be applied in order to reduce the anti-nutrient to acceptable levels.

    INFORMATION RETRIEVAL METHODS (A CASE STUDY OF ONITSHA DIVISIONAL LIBRARY)

    ABSTRACT
    This research is on Information retrieval methods (a case study of Onitsha divisional library). This study aims at finding the information retrieval system is basically a system that stores records in a file for data relevant to each request. The purpose of such system is to help access and use of knowledge which has been recorded. This study on information retrieval methods: A case study of Onitsha divisional library is an investigation into the various means adopted by the library under study in their information retrieval process. Particular attention is paid to existing information retrieval methods use in the library and how suitable they are, the basic advantages of digital information retrieval system over manual were also revealed by the study. The research methodology adopted for the research is the survey method; data was collected using questionnaire together with observation. The study also revealed the information retrieval process in the library is manual which the library organizes each materials through cataloguing, classification and indexing. Base on the problem encountered, some useful suggestions on how to improve on the information retrieval function in the library were made. The study also concluded by suggesting that further research study be made.

    EFFECTS OF PROCESSING METHODS ON THE PHYSICO-CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF SWEET POTATO AND SORGHUM

    ABSTRACT

    This study is on effects of processing methods on the physico-chemical properties of sweet potato and sorghum. This study evaluated “the effects of processing methods on the physico-chemical properties of sweet potato and sorghum flour”. Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) is an important food crop in the tropical and sub-tropical countries and belongs to the family convolvulaceae. Sweet potatoes are rich in dietary fiber, minerals, vitamins, and anti oxidants such as phenolic acids, anthocyannins, tocopherol and β-carotene. The proximate composition of sweet potato was determined and these include moisture, lipids, ash, protein, carbohydrates and fiber. In carrying out the analysis practically, methods used vary according to the food material. The anti oxidants were also determined alongside with phenol oxidase, pasting properties, minerals and sugar contents. Sorghum is a tropical plant belonging to the family of poaceae. More than 35% of sorghum is grown for human consumption. The analyses carried out in sweet potatoes are same with sorghum with the exclusion of phenol oxidase.
