CORPORATE GOVERNANCE AND FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE OF BANKS: A STUDY OF LISTED BANKS IN NIGERIA

    Sold By: Brilliantng

    ABSTRACT

This research is on Corporate governance and financial performance of banks: a study of listed banks in Nigeria. An international wave of mergers and acquisitions has swept the banking industry as boundaries between financial sectors and products have blurred dramatically. There is therefore the need for countries to have sound resilient banking systems with good corporate governance, which will strengthen and upgrade the institution to survive in an increasingly open environment. In Nigeria, the Central Bank unveiled new banking guidelines designed to consolidate and restructure the industry through mergers and acquisition. This was to make Nigerian banks more competitive and be able to operate in the global market. Despite all its attempts, the Central Bank of Nigeria disclosed that after the consolidation in 2006, 741 cases of attempted fraud and forgery involving N5.4 billion were reported. In the light of the above, this research examined the relationships that exist between governance mechanisms and financial performance in the Nigerian consolidated banks. And also to find out if there is any significant relationship between the level of corporate governance disclosure index among Nigerian banks and their performance. The Pearson Correlation and the regression analysis were used to find out whether there is a relationship between the corporate governance variables and firm’s performance. In examining the level of corporate governance disclosures of the sampled banks, a disclosure index was developed guided by the CBN code of governance and also on the basis of the papers prepared by the UN secretariat for the nineteenth session of ISAR (International Standards of Accounting and Reporting). The study therefore observed that a negative but significant relationship exists between board size, board composition and the financial performance of these banks, while a positive and significant relationship was also noticed between directors’ equity interest, level of governance disclosure and performance. Furthermore, the t- test result indicated that while a significant difference was observed in the profitability of the healthy banks and the rescued banks, no difference was seen in the profitability of banks with foreign directors and that of banks without foreign directors. The study therefore concludes that there is no uniformity in the disclosure of corporate governance practices by the banks. Likewise, the banks do not disclose in general how their debts are performing, by providing a statement that expresses outstanding debts in terms of their ages and due dates. The study suggests that efforts to improve corporate governance should focus on the value of the stock ownership of board members. Also, steps should be taken for mandatory compliance with the code of corporate governance while an effective legal framework should be developed that specifies the rights and obligations of a bank, its directors, shareholders, specific disclosure requirements and provide for effective enforcement of the law.

    ABSTRACT

Matured Mucuna Sloanei “Ukpo) seeds were sorted cleaned, cracked to expose the cotyledons. The cotyledons were divided into three equal parts. A portion was roasted in hot ash for 50 min while a portion was boiled at 1000c for 30 mins. A raw sample was used as a control. The sample were milled, sieved and package prior to analysis. The flour sample were subjected to anti-nutritional analysis using a standard methods.  The result were statistically analyzed using analysis of varience (ANOVA). The means separated using least significant difference (LSD) at 95% confidence limit. From the results some components  reduced with roasting while other reduced with boiling. Phytate had the higher values (80.41-73.73)% while Alkaloid had the least values (0.58-0.50)%. Thus the combination of dry and wet heat treatment with other pre-processing operations should be applied in order to reduce the anti-nutrient to acceptable levels.

    Sold By: Brilliantng

    ABSTRACT

This research is on Biological water quality of mabolo river in Ankpa Kogi state Nigeria. Urban River, streams and wetlands are susceptible to pollution and so, river Mabolo faces a similar problem. This river is a source of water for domestic industrial and agricultural activities for Ankpa municipality and its environs but due to poor waste management proliferation of motor gurage, markets, hotel, hospital, school and industrial setups it waters quality could have got compromise. The proposed study at four sections (including entry and exits from the municipality) seeks for access the water quality of this section of the river using biological agents like feacal coliforms and e coli and aquatic macro invertebrates as indicators for water quality the changes of the mentioned biological variables will be accessed considering a sessional variations the information generated from this study will be used by relevant stakeholders in water management to design aim at reducing water pollution and make it safe for human and aminals consumption.

    ABSTRACT

This research is on Web based plagiarism detection system (a case study of university of Uyo, Uyo Akwa Ibom state). Plagiarism is the act of taking or attempting to take or to use (whole or parts) of another person’s works, without referencing or citing him/her as the owner of this work. Web-based plagiarism was designed to detection put copyright checks on the academic environment. The system was designed to detect plagiarized material and also minimize plagiarism. The test result showed that the system can detect any similarities in the uploaded material by generating a percentage of similarities between two files or many files. Data for this study were collected using an oral interview with structured questions with the physical observation of students in the University of Uyo. Object-Oriented Analysis Design Methodology (OOADM) was used to design the solution which was implemented with the direct changeover. Hypertext preprocessor (PHP), CSS, and Bootstrap were the programming tools used to develop the system. The result is a system for checking plagiarism in the University of Uyo.

USE OF PUBLIC RELATION TO COUNTER NEGATIVE PUBLICITY ON CODEINE BAN

    Sold By: Brilliantng

    ABSTRACT

This research is on Use of public relation to counter negative publicity on codeine ban. Drug abuse amongst youths has become a major problem nationwide in Nigeria and other countries worldwide. Youths who are expected to be leaders of tomorrow have been rendered useless to themselves and the societies in which they live, due to the impact of drug on them, this has continually contributed to the increase in the number of psychiatric patients, street boys, school dropouts and delinquents. Drug abuse is a rapidly growing global problem (Lakhanpal, Agnihotri, 2007; United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime, 2007; Abudu, 2008). The problem of drug abuse poses a significant threat to the social, health, economic fabrics of the families, society and the entire nations (Giade, 2012; Oshodi, Aina & Onajole, 2010). Almost every country in the world is affected from one or more drug being abused by its citizens. The increased of drug abuse globally has brought problems such as increase in violence and crimes and diseases such as HIV/AIDS, collapse of the veins and collapse in the social structure (UNODC, 2007; Oshodi, Aina, & Onajole, 2010).

Therefore there is the need to educate the public on the need to stay away from abusing most especially medical drugs like codeine which had being used for treating the sick, public relation is a means that can be used to carry out this task as it also will help in restoring the image of the producers and distributors of codeine in Nigeria, Emzor pharmaceuticals who’s brand identity has being looked down upon based on what drug abusers have reduced codeine to, this research is timely because the negative publicity shown to codeine has seriously made people to disregard the usefulness the drug has and this has greatly affected the producing company.
