    ABSTRACT

This research is on Statistical analysis of infant and child mortality. Despite the global decline in under-five mortality rate from 90 deaths per 1,000 live births in 1990 to 48 in 2012, Nigeria has failed to record any substantial improvement.  Under-five mortality in Nigeria increased from 138 per 1,000 live births in 2007 to 158 per 1,000 live births in 2011 against the Millennium development Goal target of 71 per 1,000 live births.  The data used in this research is a secondary one; the data was fetched from the medical records department of the ABUTH, Zaria.  The research was carried out to: test for the difference of two means between infant and child mortality rate; estimate infant and child mortality rate; estimate age specific fertility rate; and to determine the trend line and forecast of infant and child mortality. Descriptive statistics, Regression and Correlation analysis are the statistical techniques used for the study. From the regression analysis result obtained, it showed that both infant and child mortality rates has a direct relationship with delivery rates. The correlation analysis result showed that there is a very strong and positive relationship between mortality and delivery rates. The study revealed that infant and child mortality rates will continue to decrease if there can be improvement in the factors under study.

    ABSTRACT

Safety Issues Involving Workers on Building Construction Sites in Nigeria (case study Abuja). The term Building Worker refers to any personnel engaged in the physical construction of a building. Just like every other occupation they are faced with challenges in performing their duties. The safety of building construction workers on sites is key to achieving success in any project, when these workers are physically healthy work can go on smoothly as virtually all works on site are dependent on the workers for implementation. Numerous building projects are situated in Abuja, Nigeria with little or no attention being paid to safety issues. This research looked into the level of safety implementation of the Construction companies and the level of safety awareness of the workers in Abuja city. 80 questionnaires were issued, 69 (85%) copies were retrieved.

The findings revealed that building site workers in Nigeria lacked the requisite trainings needed to perform their trades. The Construction company’s practice of not providing the basic safety materials and facilities was also exposed. The older workers were aware of their rights as employees on site. Lack of safety training was the major cause of accidents among the workers with minor injuries being mostly experienced. The Unqualified laborers were most frequently engaged in accidents on the sites. Accidents mainly occurred among workers less than 20 years of age. The Governmental agencies need to step up their enforcement activities in order to adequately protect these workers, the available safety regulations need updating and if possible solely Nigerian regulations should be designed.

    ABSTRACT

This research is on Role of instructional materials in academic performance in community secondary schools in Asokoro Abuja. The purpose of this research work is to examine the extent to which the selected community secondary schools in ASOKORO Abuja utilize quality and adequate instructional materials in classrooms and how this has promoted academic performance of students. This research was based on three objectives including: to explore the views of teachers and students on the extent to which instructional facilities affect student performance, to examine the challenges that teachers in community secondary schools face in accessing instructional materials and to assess the strategies that teachers use to minimize the challenges of attaining and using quality instructional materials. The study adopted a cross sectional survey design. The study population involved all community secondary schools in ASOKORO Abuja. Out of 38 community secondary schools in ASOKORO Abuja 5 schools were randomly selected for data collection.  In each school, 5 teachers and 20 students filled semistructured questionnaire. Also heads of each school and 1 secondary Abuja education officer were interviewed. The following were findings of the study: first, instructional materials are the key to teachers’ and students’ performance. Secondly, most community secondary schools in ASOKORO Abuja suffer shortage of essential teaching and learning materials. Thirdly, the study revealed that teachers used different strategies to minimize the challenges of attaining and using quality instructional materials like borrowing books and improvation. The study recommends that the government should budget sufficient funds for improving the availability of instructional materials in all secondary schools. For further research, this study proposes that aspects of how teachers and students use instructional materials for effective teaching and learning processes need to be examined.

    ABSTRACT

This research is on Design and implementation of online student clearance system, a study of BSU Nigeria. It has been a difficult issues to the final year student of BSU, when it comes to clearance, a process done by every passing out student to ensure that he or she has actually cleared the school and stand outstanding, with no charges or bills owing the school. Therefore, this research wok is design to help the school management and easy that process by developing an online clearances system for the school that will be capable of mining all the students information and payment details every mad and recorded in the students data. Therefore, the researcher will be employing one of the data mining techniques to enable this research wok scale through. Data mining remains the extraction of hidden predictive information from large database which helps in predicting future trend and behavior thereby helping management make knowledge driven decisions. With the help of data mining the system can tell if the student has actually finish his/her payment to the school or not and can decide on actions to be carried out. Structured System Analysis and Design Methodology were used in the analysis of the existing system which also provided a guide for the design of the proposed system.  The designed software will serve as a more reliable and effective means of undertaking students clearance, remove all forms of delay and stress as well as enable you understand the procedures involved as well as how to do your clearance online. NUTRITIONAL IMPACT OF THE SUPPLEMENTARY FEEDING PROGRAMME ON CHILDREN IN RURAL GBOKO

    Sold By: Brilliantng

    ABSTRACT

This research is on Nutritional impact of the supplementary feeding programme on children in rural Gboko. This study was a cross sectional evaluation study which sought to find out the nutritional impact of the supplementary feeding programme on the target population – children 6 months to 59 months. The study also looked at other factors (socio-economic and demographic) known to affect the nutritional status of children. The impact of the supplementary feeding programme was measured based on anthropometric indicators – height-for -age, weight –for – age, and weight for-height.

The study used multistage sampling techniques to select 400 children 6 to 59 months from the base-line study carried out at the beginning of the programme in 2003 by reviewing the existing baseline data. Four hundred (400) children 6 to 59 months old benefiting from the supplementary feeding programme as at August, 2007 were also selected using the register of beneficiary children in each community. Anthropometric measurements were taken of the sampled children (post intervention) while same was retrieved from the sampled baseline data (baseline). Mothers/ care-givers of the children were the subjects for interview, and similar information was sought out from the sampled baseline data.

The results of the study were analyzed using Epi Info 3.4 software and presented in appropriate statistical graphs and tables

The results of this study revealed that among all the under fives surveyed at the baseline, 57.9% of them were stunted, of which 26.2% were severely stunted; 66.7% were underweight with 30.7% being severely underweight, and 41.8% were wasted, with 8.8% severely wasted.  At the post intervention four years later, stunting went up by11.2% to 69.1%, underweight also went up by 3.5% to70.2%.Wasting, however, reduced by 10.5% to 34.3%. Severe stunting, underweight and wasting also followed similar trends, with severe stunting increasing by10.0%, severe underweight increasing by 0.4%, and severe wasting dropping by 3.5%. This showed that there were increases in the proportions of stunting and underweight between the baseline and post intervention groups. Comparing the difference in the proportions of moderate and severe stunting at baseline and post intervention with  95% CI, it has been revealed that the increase was not significant ( i.e. moderate stunting, 0.12,-0.01; and severe stunting,0.05,-0.17). The difference in increase in the proportion of moderate and severe underweight was also not  significant with 95% CI (i.e. moderate underweight, 0.03,-0.09; and severe underweight, 0.05,0.06). However, the proportion of wasting reduced at the post intervention stage. Comparison of the proportion of reduction of moderate and severe wasting also indicated that the reduction was mild at 95% CI (i.e. moderate wasting, 0.11,-0.01; and severe wasting, 0.17,0.0004). This is an indication that the supplementary feeding project was only successful in reducing acute malnutrition (wasting) rather than chronic malnutrition.(stunting and underweight).

Chronic malnutrition continued to increase over the project implementation period. Other factors that might affect nutritional status generally did not seem to bring about improvements in

the proportion of stunting and underweight after the intervention. The difference in nutritional status by sex equally did not show any different trend. Stunting and underweight increased in both males and females after the intervention. Like in the general target group, wasting however decreased in both males and females after the intervention. Comparison of the differences in proportions of decrease in the stunting and underweight, and the proportion of reduction in wasting were equally not very significant at 95% confidence level.

The study recommends among other things that supplementary feeding interventions should target severely malnourished children for rehabilitation with education while mothers/care-takers of moderately malnourished children are targeted with socio-economic interventions, education, and possibly take-home rations.
