Abstract

Perception of adolescents about the factors responsible for sexual abuse in selected secondary schools, Ilorin, Kwara state. Sexual abuse is a rampant case in most secondary schools in the country with little or no end in sight, the adolescents’ perception helps in controlling these prevailing circumstances. This project work, therefore, examined the perception of adolescents about the factors responsible for sexual abuse in selected secondary schools, Ilorin, Kwara State. It also informed the health officers and school administrators on the need for the complete eradication of sexual abuse. Among the objectives is to identify the knowledge of adolescents about child sexual abuse, to assess the perception of adolescents about factors responsible for sexual abuse and to assess the perception of adolescents about prevention of child sexual abuse and furthermore, to find out the relationship between the gender of adolescents and perception about child sexual abuse. Many medical and allied works of literature were reviewed to develop more facts for the project work. This research uses descriptive survey to sample 90 students from the selected schools. Questionnaire is the instrument used to gather and analyze the data, 90 questionnaires were distributed out of which 90 were retrieved. In conclusion, recommendations were made that the School health nurses should focus on educating adolescents about child sexual abuse. School health programs focused on educating adolescents about child sexual abuse should be established by nurses. Also, awareness/enlightenment campaigns on the prevention of child sexual abuse should be organized. Finally, there is a need for nurses to enlighten parents in the community on the importance of educating their children on sexual abuse. Keywords sexual abuse, adolescent, secondary school, and abuse
