Description
Purification of silica sand by acid leaching for glass production sand deposit along river flood plain (case study of Chalanazawan Plan Jos south, Plateau state).
Abstract
The research (project) work covers the process of the purification of silica sand by the hydrofluoric acid leaching method for glass production. Fresh samples of silica sand were collected from the study area Zawan Jos South local government plateau state. The physical properties and chemical composition of the silica sand sample were determined. AAS atomic assumption spectrometer to determine the measurement of the concentration of major mineral oxide in the silica sample. The result of the analysis review that silicon dioxide Si02 (89.43) forms the predominant metal oxide in the sample and followed by aluminum oxide Al2O3, (5.33) iron oxide Fe2O3, (1.63) sodium oxide Na2O (0.13). Other oxides such as potassium oxide K2O (0.07), MgO (0.36), and CaO (0.24). were also present. The result shows that the percentage of Fe2O3, (1.63) is above the recommended value (0.005%) by European standards. Al2O3 value from the result when compared with the European Commission’s minimum standard for glass production value (1.6%). In conclusion, the sample collected from Zawan Jos South local government cannot be used directly for glass production when compared to a minimum standard because of it high Fe2O3 (1.63) and Al2O3 (5.33). It has to pass through some purification process.
