Abstract

This project material focuses on Incidence of protein energy malnutrition among children under five years in General Hospital, Yelwa Yauri, Kebbi state. Protein energy malnutrition continues to be a major health problem in Nigeria and this contributes substantially to childhood mortality. Thus, this study was designed to determine the incidence of protein-energy malnutrition in under five years in the general hospital, Yauri Kebbi State from January 2013 to December 2017. The research design used was a retrospective study design, data was obtained and collected from the medical records kept by the record department. The result obtained revealed that the incidence of PEM among some Hausa is quite high when compared to other Kambari, higher among female under-five than the male under-five children. It is therefore recommended that nurses and other healthcare workers should be involved in health education to the members of the community, especially mothers on the need to provide an adequate diet for children, especially under five children. Furthermore, mothers attending clinics should be health educated on the various causes of PEM, risk factors among children as well as the prevention. This will help to reduce the incidence of PEM.
