Description
Abstract
This project is on economic implication of multiple hostel accommodation in tertiary institution in Nigeria (a case study of federal polytechnic Nekede, Owerri). Housing being one of the three necessaries of human life (existence) is an aspect of development economics and of great interest to all sector of every nation and to the world at large. Although housing is not directly in the primary assignment of educational administrators with respect to instruction but it is being regarded as an important aspect of pupil personal management in education. This is because it is said that academic performance can be influenced by the quality and quantity of the residential accommodation (as an aspect of the learning environment) of students. The provision of affordable and suitable accommodation for students currently studying at any of the public higher educational institutions remains a key challenge and short supply of this hostel accommodation is exacerbated by high rental cost. This work identifies and examines the factors influencing the provision of hostel accommodation in Federal Polytechnic Nekede. It was observed that the investors are motivated by the ever increasing demand for hostel accommodation, owing to the inability of government/school authorities to build/construct more suitable and affordable hostel accommodation. More so, it is recommended that government/school authority should partner with private investors in the development of suitable and affordable hostel accommodation. Furthermore, a measure should be employed in keeping existing hostel inhabitable/tenantable state.
