Description
Abstract
This project focuses on statistical investigation of the effects of crude oil spillage on agricultural farmlands. In this study, an attempt has been made to critically evaluate the effects of crude oil spillage on the environment by investigating how it affects farmlands. The study was designed to examine the incidence of oil spillage on agricultural farmland in one of the oil producing communities in Delta State (Gana-Agbarha, Ughelli North Local Government Area). A total of 55 petty commercial farmers were visited and interviewed on the incidence of crude oil spillage and its effects on their crop production. The data obtained were analyzed using the ratio estimation procedure. The results revealed that the ratio of the affected farmlands by oil spillage is currently 20% based on the estimate from the study and this indicates that the impact of oil spillage on farmland is high. The associated economic loss caused by farmland contamination by crude oil spillage in the region is worth N115,969,680 annually.
