Abstract
This project takes a look at a study of acquisition practice in university libraries in Edo state, a case study of Ambrose Alli University library, Ekpoma University of Benin library and Benson Idahosa University library. The study investigated acquisition practice in university libraries in Edo State. Five (5) research questions were raised for this study. The study abducted a descriptive research design. Population of this study were 120 three selected Universities professional, para-professional and supportive staff librarian. More so, the entire population were sampled and total enumeration sampling techniques was adopted for the study. The research instrument used for this study was a structured questionnaire. A respond rate 100% was recorded data collected was analyzed using frequency, table and count percentage (%) ot answer research question. The result reviewed that acquisition of library materials in University Libraries in the studied showed that most library material are acquire through purchase, gift, donation and legal deposits. The findings also shows the types of information materials acquire by university libraries in rending information services. However, the finding also indicate that library materials in university libraries in Edo State are facing some problems which could cause limitation of library materials and these are: lack of fund for effective acquisition of materials, lecturers’ poor attitude to the selection of materials before acquisition and time lag and so forth. Based on constrain, it was recommended that library management should make appeal to both state government and parent organization to provide fund for effective acquisition of library materials to meet the objectives of libraries and the needs of the users. It was also recommended that heads of acquisition department should be included in the acquisition committee.
