Description
Abstract
Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is an infection caused by the presence and growth of micro organisms in the urinary tract, it us usually due to bacteria from the digestive tract, which climb up to the opening of the urethra and begins to multiply to cause infection. Urinary tract infection is the most common bacterial infections experienced by elderly patients. The ethanolic and methanolic extract of zea mays and cymbopogan citratus showed that the anti bacterial activity against organisms (E. coli, pseudomonas aeruginosa, staphylococcus aeureus, klebsiella pneumonia) at different concentration was more effective using cymbopogan citratus. The phychemical test were carried out using standard method of analysis and the result was confirmed that in both zea mays and cymbopogan citratus have secondary metabolities (saponisn, tannins, flavonoids, akhaloids, steroids and glycosides) where steroid is absent in methanolic extract of corn silk. However, the study concluded that extract of cymbopogan citratus (ethanol extract) and zea mays (ethanol extract) possess an intermediate anti microbial activity against E. coli, pseudomonas aeruginosa, staphylococcus aeureus, klebsiella pneumonia. The extract of lemon grass and corn silk have lower anti microbial activity and the test pathogens as compared the disc of ciprofloxacin.
