Description
An overview of phytochemistry of some selected plants – Telfairia Occidentalis (Ugwu) and Gongronema Latifolium (Otazi) and their relevance.
Abstract
The phytochemical compositions of the dried leaves of Telfairia occidentalis and Gongronema latifolium will be analyzed using the methods of Association of Official Analytical Chemists (A.O.A.C). The results of phytochemical constituents will show that the leaves of Telfairia occidentalis contains flavonoid (7.12±0.50%), saponins (7.01±0.30%), alkaloids (1.03±0.24%) phenol (0.19±0.01%) and tannins (0.12±0.08%). The leaves of Gongronemalatifoliumwill record the following: hydrocyanic acid (48.5±0.01%), saponins (38.0±0.01%), tannins (30.0±0.01%), flavonoid (23.4±0.01%), phytic acid (20.0±0.01%), alkaloids (10.0±0.02%) and phenol (7.1±0.02%). The results will show that Gongronemalatifolium leaves possess high concentrations of saponins, tannins and flavonoid compared to Telfairia occidentalis.
