Abstract

This project material looks at Awareness of mothers on diarrhea as a risk factor for acute kidney injury among children at General Hospital, Offa Kwara state. Diarrhoea is defined as a passage of three or more watery stools in a 24hours period, it accounts for high levels of mortality in young children in developing countries, resulting in dehydration, hypovolaemia, hypoperfusion to the kidneys and acute kidney injury, the aim of the study are to identify the causes of diarrhoea and the effectiveness of fluid replacement therapy/ORT in the prevention of AKI. The population for the study were mothers that are nurturing children age ranging 6months-5years. The study explored possible factors that influence diarrhoea and the effectiveness of fluid replacement therapy/ORT in the management of diarrhoea. A total number of sixty (60) subjects were selected from the total population. A well self-structured questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. The research hypotheses were answered with the use of inferential statistics (chi-square) results revealed that poor source of water supply, poor drainage system, poor hygiene practices and other factors contribute to the development of diarrhoea while the age of the mother had no significant influence on the awareness of diarrhoea as a risk factor of AKI, also fluid replacement therapy/ORT play a vital role in the prevention of AKI. Therefore, mothers had poor awareness of the factors that causes diarrhoea and the development of AKI. More studies on the importance of fluid replacement therapy/ORT, in the management of diarrhoea, was suggested.
