1.0Introduction
Background to Study
The contribution of education to development in the country since independence has been very significant. Education plays vital role in any meaningful development in the country. The development of the country form all ramifications emanate from education because it is the light rays that liumine human decision in all aspects of life.
Education is the major industry that stimulates development of nation especially in developing countries like Nigeria. It is the bedrock of every success. Success from all angles is a product of education because it is only education that gives knowledge about thing.
For instance, the campaign programme on the issue of genderbased violence and discrimination, it is through the education programmes on broadcast media that enable people to know what gender equality is and its discriminative effect on the years mass media have contributed significantly to the education all development in this country. The normous reports about education state the government action towards education and make it unique and the indispensable one.
Tell magazine of August 12 1991 states that education has a huge contribution to the blooming understanding in a global village through the instrumentality of the international organization. It emphasized the gigantic stand of education in the development of a society and harmonious living between individual and among nations.
The involvement on Nigeria in the international bodies/organization today is a great achievement of education that is seeking through our narrow as compared to precolonial era when the education standard was absolutely poor. Education is the emancipation from the state pf underdevelopment as written by Bobs 1974 He holds that the good in educational system has been realistically organized and deliciously applied with and insight is geared towards development.
The contribution of mass media has remained profitable.
Radio station Nigeria have been in the fore front of enlighntment, campaign, educating the general public including skills acenisition programmes, supplemently classroom teachings, adult education e.t.c.
This study seeks to determine the extent to which radio has been used in enhancing education in Nigeria.
1.1 Statement of Problem
The electronic media are expected to play a critical role in the advancement of education in Nigeria, but to what extent has Radio been used for that purpose
This is the problem the study seeks to address.
1.2 Scope of the Study
The researcher has limited his study to Radio Benue Makurdi, covering their two frequencies AM and FM.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objectives of this study are to bring the following.
ii To understand the effects of education broadcasting in Nigeria.
iii To know the extent to which radio has used for educational purpose in the country.
