Description
Abstract
The free radical and reactive oxygen species scavenging activities of n-hexane leate aqueous extract of Emilia Sonchifolia plant was evaluated by employing various anti oxidant analysis: Lipid peroxidation, superoxide dismutase activity, catalase activity, glutathione peroxidase assays. A total of twenty (20) albino rats where used for this study and where group into four of five (5) rats in each, Group one (1) serve as control, group two (2) is the extracts only, group three (3) is the negative control with sodium arsenite and group four (4) is extract and sodium arsenite. The result from superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase assay indicates that the animals in group two (2) and four (4) shows signifaut increase in the activities of the antioxidant enzymes as compared to group one (1)and three (3). The lipid poroxidation assessment of the extract indicates that there is significant increase in effect of the plant extract as to reduce the activity of reactive oxygen species. This, Emilia Sochifolia leaves aqueous extract can serve as a potential source of antioxidant medication in the treatment of oxidative stress.
