Knowledge and use of Glasgow Coma Scale among nurses in the care of unconscious paediatrics patients in paediatrics units, University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin, Kwara state.

This project work examined the knowledge and use of Glasgow coma scale among nurses in the care of unconscious pediatrics patients in pediatrics units, University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin, Kwara state. Among the objectives is to assess the level of knowledge of Nurses in University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital concerning Glasgow coma scale, to determine the extent to which Nurses in University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital use Glasgow coma scale in assessing patients with neurologic problems, to identify factors affecting the use of Glasgow coma scale in assessing patient with neurological problems in University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital and to find out whether Nurses knowledge and educational qualification have an influence on utilization of Glasgow coma scale in the care of unconscious paediatric patients in University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital. Many medical and allied literatures were reviewed to develop more facts for the project work. This research use descriptive survey to sample 65 staff of General Hospital Ilorin, Ilorin, Kwara state. Questionnaire is the instrument used to gather and analyze the data, 60 questionnaires were distributed out of which 60 were retrieved. In conclusion, recommendations were made that the Government should employ more health personnel to reduce the workload and prevent the shortage of nurses, Government should allocate more funds to the health sector in order to ensure affordable and safe health. -Government should encourage all health workers by giving incentives and awards to outstanding ones, Nurses should try to broaden their knowledge through reading and attending seminars that will further boost their knowledge on GCS and Nurses should ensure that they perform the ideal practice always.
