Description
Abstract
Biodiesel production is a valuable process which needs a continued study and optimization process because of its environmentally advantageous attributes and its renewable nature. The present study is intended to consider aspects related to the production of biodiesel from neem oil. This report deals with biodiesel obtained from neem oil which was produced using Acid-base catalyst methods. The optimum condition to achieve yield of biodiesel was at a temperature of 600C and molar ratio of neem oil and methanol 1:6. From the result obtained it was shown that the produced biodiesel was within the recommended standards of biodiesel as shown, density (O.896g), ASTM value (0.88g), Flash point (110-160), ASTM value (100-1700C), iodine (81-23) ASTM value (120). The properties of biodiesel produced include viscosity (5.30cst), iodine value (81-23), density (0.896g), and sulfur content (0.0038). The properties of biodiesel compared favourable with the recommendation by the American Standard Testing Method. Hence use of non-edible oil having high free fatty acid content which was converted into biodiesel using acid-base catalyst method was achieved.
