Abstract
This project is on The causes of poor academic performance among senior secondary students in FCT Abuja – a case study of selected secondary schools in Abaji Area Council. The study examined the causes of poor academic performance of selected secondary schools in Abaji Area Council in the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations. Based on the results obtained by the students in both science and the art subjects with effect from 1983– 1986, it could be noticed that there was a drastic drop at their level of performance. The 1983 statistical analysis of the Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations (S.S.C.E) results show that only 14.5 percent passed physics, 12.3 percent passed chemistry, and 9 percent passed Biology, while a few of the students passed mathematics and English Language respectively. The level of performances continuess to fall in subsequent years except in 1985 when 25.8 percent passed physics, 11.73 percent passed chemistry, 19.78 percent passed Biology, while mathematics 11.44 percent passed and 5.1 percent passed English language. In 1986, the schools recorded the poorest result. This shows that every year there were reductions in the performance of students in the senior school certificate Examinations, in the selected schools in Abaji Area Council.
