Description
Abstract
This project looks at The effect of crude avocado and pawpaw leaves extract on kidney function of guinea pigs. The objectives of the study are to evaluate the effects of orally administered pawpaw, avocado leaves extract alone and a combination of both pawpaw and avocado leaves extract on the kidney integrity of guinea pigs. A total of twenty-four guinea pigs were divided into four groups containing six guinea pigs each. Group I, II, III and IV received 5ml/kg distilled water, pawpaw leaves extract, avocado leaves extracts and a combination of pawpaw and avocado leaves extract respectively. Some parameters were investigated at the end of the experiment. The result revealed a significant increase in the blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, sodium, bicarbonate and globulin in the avocado leaves extract treated guinea pigs (P0.05). On the other hand, the blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, sodium and chloride were reduced (P0.05) with an increase in bicarbonate in the pawpaw leaves extract treated guinea pigs. Also the blood creatinine, sodium and potassium were reduced (P0.05) in the group treated with a combination of pawpaw and avocado leaves extract. The histological examination of the kidney revealed a disruption in the kidney integrity caused by the extracts. This result indicates that both pawpaw and avocado leaves extracts may be nephotoxic. The toxicity observed in both extract could be dose-dependent.
