The effect of ethanolic leaves extract of Laportea Aestuans on the kidney function indices of Alloxan induced diabetic male albino Wistar rats.
Abstract
Investigation of the effect of ethanolic leaves extracts of Laportea aestuans on the kidney function indices of alloxan induced diabetic male albino wistar rats was conducted using standard analytical methods. Twenty-five (25) male healthy albino Wistar rats weighing 137– 177g were randomly assigned to five (5) groups of five (5) animals each. Group 1 which was the control were sustained on normal feed and water only, group 2, 3, 4 and 5 were administered with 150mg/kg body weight of alloxan monohydrate intrapentoneally after overnight fast. Fasting blood glucose was conducted and animals with blood glucose of 200mg/dl and above were considered as diabetic. Group 3 was treated with 80mg//kg metformin, Group 4 and 5 were treated with 50 and 150mg/kg body weight. Treatments lasted for 21 days, all rats were allowed free access to rat chow at ad libitum. The results showed a significant (p 0.05) increase in urea, uric acid and creatinine concentration in the diabetic control when compared to the non-diabetic control. However, significant (p 0.05) reduction was observed in both metformin and extract treated groups when compared to the untreated groups. The results suggest reno-protective potential of the extract at the tested dosage...
