CHAPTER ONE

BACKGROUND OF THE SUBJECT MATER

It has been noted that the efficiency and the productivity level of the workers in any organization depends to a great extent on how well the organization is managed. In the contemporary time, man has always geared his efforts towards ensuring that the concept of management is not thrown to the winds, and he does this in order to enhance the changes of organization to enjoy optional productivity.

Moreover, It is an establishment fact that management according to Ejiofor (1987) is the process of getting thus through and with people and to make this happen in an organization, the concept of management becomes the point on which organization usually revolves. However, the research believes that the hotel industry in these kind of organization where the concept of goods management is a pre-requisite for effective and efficient performance, of the workers. This is because it is only when the workers are efficient and effective that the productivity level becomes high.

Consequently, the management style adopted by those at the helm hotel industry affect the productivity of the workers, this is true because, when the manager or leader is effective and efficient the workers under him will be efficient and effective. But when the reverse is the case the end result is inefficiency, poor performance and low productivity. There is no doubt whatsoever that the hotel industry is an important sector in the nations economic system given the fact that which money is committed into the industry by either a single individual who owns such industry or by government owned. And for the fact hotel industry is a profit oriented organization, it becomes clear that if the productivity level of the workers, there is not encouraging. The tendency that the objectives for which it established will not be realised. We are aware of the consequence of inefficiency or low productivity in any organization. It was terry who stated that an inefficient organization is likely be one that operates with wastes or carelessness and not make for work satisfaction, has no cleanliness of authority and no proper exaction of responsibilities and does not allow for appropriate participation in problem solving, gives, no room for security and status and does furnish opportunity for personal and competitive pay rates, this means that for an organization like hotel industry the participation of both the employee and the management in decision making as well as responsibility and authority to enable them carry out their functions with carton which will avoid wastes and careless and make the employee lie worker) have a sense of belonging with the organization is a sire-qua-non to operational efficiency. All these can be achieved when there is one condition is good management style. A close look at many organization including the hotel industry reveals that management style being practiced in them by those at the helm of affairs are characterized by favourish autocracy, inability to delegate, inability decentralize authority, poor communication with subordinates, inability to allow employees to participate n decision making and above all inability to motivate worker for greater productivity.

The question then is how far and to what extent does the management styles affects the workers in organization such as the hotel industry? It is in response to the above that into the subject matter the effect of management style on worker productivity in the hotel industry in Enugu State.

1.2 PROBLEM ASSOCIATED WITH THE SUBJECT

It has been an observed phenomenon that many organization in this country have been experiencing a lot of problems over the years. Many national reasoning citizens are of the opinion that a lot of discrepancies have observation in the performance level f most organization. This observation is no far from the truth especially when one compares one organization and its counterparts in the same line of business studies have shown that is recent times, most organization have not their waterloo because of bad management, for instance in Enugu State, most hotel industry have either gone out of business or are at the verge o collapse because of the way in which they are managed. Consequently, sow of them have performed so dismally to the extent that they found it’s impossible to pay their workers salaries due to low productivity. Thus low productivity gas given rise to inefficiency and low morals among the workers. However, prominent among the cause of low productivity, in some of this hotel industry is the kind of management style practiced by either the owners of those at the helm affairs,

Events have proved that in organization where there is good management style like allowing workers to participate in decision making, delegation of authority and responsibility, the practice at the concept of management by objective (PTBO) good communication subordinates e.t.c, the tendency that the workers have a sense of belonging and put in their best in terms of productivity. But where the reverse is the case, there are always cases at inefficiency among the workers and low productivity. This discrepancy in the performance of organization, (especially the hotel industry) Hopes on identify a problem “ the effect of management style on workers productivity in the hotel industry Enugu state. It is as a result o this that the study intends to look into subject matter.

1.3 THE PROBLEM THAT THE STUDY WILL BE CONCERNED WITH

The study dwelt on the effect which the management style adopted or practiced in the hotel industry has on productivity workers. There are some reasons why an organization such as a hotel industry is established, there includes to provide services to the public to make profit to justify them existence and above all to serve as a provider of employment for the unemployed citizenry based on this, the objectives of this study are armed at;

(i) Examine the management style adopted in the hotel selected for the study.

(ii) Identifying the factors that are responsible for the poor performance of some selected hotel in Enugu State.

(iii) Examining what extent the practice of effective management is existence in some hotel industry.

(iv) Identifying the kind of management problem which militate against the attainment of the objective of the establishment of the hotel industry.

1.4 THE IMPORTANCE OF STUDING THE AREA

It is important to recall that this study primarily with the hotel industry in Enugu State. It is also important to note the study. It is also important to note that the study was undertaken to analyze the effects of management styles on the production of workers.

Consequently, this study will enable the researcher to make an outline of the organization principles, examine to organizational system or structure of the hotel industry and consequently make suggestions that will benefit many organizations including the hotel industry.

This study will also help to identify that factors responsible for structural gaps and functional overlaps in the hotel industry which are the big products of bad and ineffective management.

Moreover, this study is important because it will enable the researcher to make propositions for hotel industry so as to make them achieve the objective for which they are established the study is very significant, because the findings and the subsequent recommendations would be at great importance to another organization which might be experiencing inefficiency and how low productivity on the part of their workers as a result of the management style adopted by them. Finally, this study would be as contributions to the academic development of the theories of management styles, and for this reason would be very useful to fellow student and researchers especially those who may wish to research further on this subject matters.

1.4 DEFINITION OF IMPORTANT TERMS

According to Osuala (1983:58)” an adequate statement of the problem also define, it is very carefully. In terms of its scope and as a result, it is essential for a research work. Based on the above, the ambit or scope of this study covered two-hotel industry in Enugu State. This two hotel were selected for this study.
