Abstract

The effect of the dominance of a ruling political party in Delta state. This study assessed the effect of political party dominance on political participation among youths in Delta state. Three local governments of the state were sampled for examination and the respondents included different categories of residence in the state. Questionnaires were administered to respondents to obtain the necessary data needed for the study. Percentage frequency and chi-square test of independence were used in analyzing the data. The result indicated that the influence of a ruling political party affects the electoral result of a state and that good accountability of government is a major factor that facilitates economic and societal development. Political party dominance system was found to reduce the competition strength of potential political leaders and that the use of political thugs by dominant parties does not increase the insecurity of individuals in the state. The study concluded that the incidence of dominance is bound to continue re-occurring and this brings an endless circle to the political party dominance system in a democratic state, with the reduction in competition, the dominant party gets to provide designated leaders that are to continue the leadership
