Abstract

This research work is on Evaluation of the importance of health information management in primary health care. The study investigated the health records practice in Primary Health Centre in Oyo East local government area of Oyo state. A descriptive survey was used with a total number of one hundred and thirty-three (133) health workers were randomly selected. Information collected from the respondents by means of purpose designed, self-administered questionnaire, one hundred and ten(110) of the one hundred and twenty (120) were retrieved back. The data collected were analyzed using appropriate sample tables, percentage and frequency distribution. Findings revealed that that 90.9% of the respondents have knowledge of record keeping in primary health care while 9.1 of the respondents have no knowledge of record-keeping in primary health care. Findings on space availability for records keeping revealed that that 32.7 of the respondents agree that there is enough space for record keeping while 67.3 did not agree, which means the majority of the respondents disagreed that there is no enough space for keeping health records. Also, findings based on the relevance of health records keeping in primary health care revealed that that 80.9% of the respondents agreed that health records keeping is relevant in primary health care while 19.1% of the respondents disagreed that health records keeping is not relevant in primary health care. The findings highlight the ineffective practice of health record keeping that may hinder the quality of care given to the patient. Hence there must be periodic training and retraining of health workers on the relevance of health records, also government needs to employ health records personnel to each health care facility.
