Description

An assessment of groundnut production – problem and prospects.

Abstract

The research was carried out to assess groundnut production problems and prospects in Malumfashi local government during the 2017 rainy season period. sixty (60) study questionnaires were distributed randomly to 50 farmers in the study area out of which 50 were retrieved. The information derived from these questionnaires was later analyzed through the use of simple percentage as the tool of analysis. Major findings with regard to problems and prospects of groundnut production in the study area to the study are: prevalence of pets and diseases, lack of government assistance, existence of gap between the farmers and extension agents, lack of improved varieties, poor pricing etc. The study found that the area has the main pre-requisites towards the production of groundnut such as: adequate rainfall, fertile soil, large land size and markets where groundnut producers can easily sell their produce. The study recommends that: the government should provide fertilizer, seeds and loams to groundnut farmers to improve their production, government should set up the extension programme in order to teach the farmer’s new ways of farming for better production amongst others.
