Description
Abstract
This project work looks on evaluation of guidance and counseling services on the academic performance of biology students in selected secondary schools. This study investigated the effect of the implementation of guidance and counselling programme in secondary schools in Fagge local government area, Kano state. In the study, a descriptive design of survey type was adopted. The sample for the study was selected using simple random sampling. Also, the data collected was analyzed using simple percentage. The results of the study have shown that students are likely to patronize functional guidance and counselling to services in tertiary institutions. The outstanding concerns of most students border on educational issues. Most Nigerian students tend to be reluctant to take their problems to counselling centres for fear of the non-confidentiality of counsellors. Most counselling centres lack appropriate facilities and equipment’s to work with, thereby tempering the effectiveness of the centres. The study, therefore, recommends that guidance and counselling centre should be able to satisfy all the student’s needs (personal, social, academics and vocationally), students should be encouraged to visit the centre through the use of entertainments i.e. Drama, film show etc. Also, guidance and counselling officials or personnel should be professionally trained to allow the smooth running of the profession.
