Abstract

This project looks into An examination of the application of the doctrine of separation of powers in Nigeria. The study examines the role of the legislature in impeachment proceedings under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (As Amended). The Constitution of Nigeria clearly ensures the separation of governmental powers as an underlined principle. Separation of powers as an underlying principle of governance vests legislative powers of Nigeria in the National Assembly thus, impeachment as a constitutional process is not designed as a weapon of political oppression of the president or the governor, but however impeachment, when used appropriately, puts the government of the day on it toes, ensuring it fulfills its legally sworn ought.
