Abstract
The Survey was carried out on an assessment of post harvest losses using PHL visual losses model of pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millspaugh.) at Yankaba market of Kano State. Data was obtained from 100 wholesaler marketers using questionnaires and interviews. Results obtained show that the marketers were mainly males, married and within the active age bracket of 31– 40 years. Also, a higher percentage of them had one form of formal education or another. Inadequate storage facilities, lack of post harvest management skills and pests and diseases among others were causes of carrot spoilage. The storage facilities available in the market have community storage has the most used facility. In addition, the most dominant economic loss in the market is lack of post harvest management skills as a result of inadequate post harvest management training. Recommendations such as the provision of more storage facilities, good transportation, pests and disease control, market patronage and post management skills to the pigeon pea farmers and marketers were made.
