Description
Abstract
This project looks at Awareness and practice of pressure sores prevention in the care of the elderly among nurses in Madonna University Teaching Hospital. This is a descriptive correlational study. The subjects were nurses working at Madonna University Teaching Hospital. 100 nurses were chosen as the sample size but 91 were used for data analysis as these ones returned the questionnaires (a 91% response rate). Data were analyzed by descriptive and Pearson product-moment correlation statistics. This was done with the use of Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The findings showed that nurses had a very low level of knowledge (M 57.79%, SD 9.2%), and a moderate level of practice (M 77.55%, SD 11.0%) in the pressure sores/ulcer prevention in the care of the elderly. There was a positive correlation between nurses’ years of service and practice (r .34, p .01). However, no significant correlation was found between knowledge and years of service (r .14, p .05), and knowledge and practice regarding pressure ulcer prevention in the care of the elderly (r .14, p .05). These findings suggest that nurses need to develop positive attitudes and to increase their knowledge of pressure ulcer prevention in order to improve nursing practice in Madonna University Teaching Hospital. This could be addressed through the organization of in-service training and refresher courses for the nurses in order to keep them up to date with new knowledge and best practices for pressure sores prevention in the care of the elderly.
