Abstract

This project looks at Burnout syndrome and use of therapeutic approaches among nursing students in Madonna University, Rivers state. A quantitative method was used in gathering and analyzing the data. For this purpose, questionnaires were distributed to 250 respondents from level 100 to 500 who constituted the sample. The random sampling technique was used and the sample was determined using Taro Yamane formula for sample size determination. From the results, the major risk/causing factors of burnout and stress among the students was relationship, academic, environmental and personal factors. Each had sub-factors that caused stress and based on the results, findings show that for relationship as source of stress, working with new people was the highest factor. With regards to academic issues, class load was the highest. Future worry under environmental factors was the main cause of stress to students and financial difficulty came up under personal factors that cause stress. The results show that burnout affects the overall well being and academic performance of the nursing students. Therapeutic approaches used to resolve the burnout syndrome include exercise, meditation, time with family and friends, medical attention, eating well, and sleeping 7-8 hours a night. The most recommended strategies were eating well, sleeping adequately and spending time with family and friends. Among the recommendations was that there should be frequent interaction between academic staffs and students on how best to schedule intensive courses in the cause of the semester work. This should cover clinical experiences, postings and other academic exercises. Also, it was recommended that a good eating habit should be a priority for students in relation to stress management. In addition, enough sleep and exercise should be adopted as a remedy to stress and burnout syndrome.
