Abstract A contrast to the network of yesterday which were based on collapsed backbone, today’s network design is characterized by flatter architecture thanks to switches. Virtual local area networks (VLANs) enable users access to network resources based on departments (units) not based on the location of the user. Cisco has become the”de-facto” standard for networking. This research work implements and design VLANs using the Cisco 2950 catalyst switches and the Cisco 3600 series routers. This research work uses for the school of science and technology as a case study to show the importance of virtual local area networks (VLANs).
