Description
Abstract
Poultry meats and eggs provide affordable, quality food products that are consumed by most ethnic populations worldwide. Advances in knowledge and technology over recent decades favour the growth and intensification of poultry production in developing countries where there are increasing human populations and economic constraints. This project is therefore embarked upon to know the develop equations to determine body weight and body composition using measurements taken with inexpensive instruments. 200 units of day-old chicks were brought from farms in Offa metropolis and reared in the botanical garden of the department of science laboratory Technology, Federal Polytechnic, Offa under special conditions of treatment and supervising, reared for twelve (12) weeks, fed with starter feed, grower feed, and finisher feed. It was observed that they increased in weight normally, which explains that if birds are properly fed with good feeds, subjected to favourable conditions, such as light exposure, heat exposure and treatments, they would grow well and have more weight and meat good enough for human consumption. Keywords: Body composition, chicken, pelvis width, skin fold thickness, total electrical conductivity.
