Abstract
This research work was designed to study the effects of corruption on the conduct of elections at the local government level in Kogi state. Corruption has in no small measure distorted the social integrity of Nigerians and Ibaji local government area, in particular, this has manifested in the conduct of elections in the local government where all forms of electoral malpractices were detected which has led to cancellation and non-acceptance of election results in the area thereby leading to re-run of elections. The main objective of this research work is to appraise the effect of corruption on the concept of elections in Kogi state. The method used in collecting data was mainly primary and secondary data and questionnaires were administered to a population size comprised of three hundred (300) staff of Ibaji Local Government both junior, intermediate and senior cadre. A total of one hundred (100) questionnaires were distributed to the respondents, ninety (90) of these questionnaires were retrieved upon which the researcher used for the analysis of data. Based on the data presented and analyzed, the following findings were made corruption is well known by the people of the local government area. Corruption had great effects on the Nigerian economy, especially at the local government level. Having critically examined this topic, some recommendations were made: Poverty eradication should be treated with utmost seriousness it deserves to curtail the menace of corruption and to those who see it as an alternative for living. Government should encourage religious leaders to give admonition or patriotism to their members because they have this natural access to the supernatural impartation of what they believed to be right in all aspects of human life.
