Description

Effect of feeding frequency on nutrient digestibility of west african dwarf goats.

Abstract

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of feeding frequency on nutrient digestibility of West African dwarf (WAD) goats fed concentrate supplement and groundnut haulms. Twelve (12) growing bucks were used and divided equally into three treatments with four goats per treatment. Concentrate was fed to the animals at 5% of their body weight in which treatment 1 was fed once, treatment 2 were fed twice and treatment 3 were fed thrice. The experiment lasted for eighty-four days in which during the last seven days, six animals were selected (two per treatment) to be placed in a digestibility cage and fecal samples collected were subjected to laboratory analysis. The data collected were subjected to one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) in a Completely Randomized Design arrangement using SAS 2010 package. At the end of the study, the result shows that the ether extract and acid detergent fibre were influenced (P0.05) by feeding frequency. The study revealed that feeding frequency with twice feeding had no negative effect on the nutrient digestibility of WAD goats and could therefore be concluded that concentrate can be fed twice daily to WAD goats.
