Abstract
This study focuses on English Language skills needed by secretarial students in higher institutions (A Case Study of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja). The descriptive survey design was used in this project work. The population for the study comprised Forty (40) respondents from four different departments in the polytechnic, where Twenty (20) were selected from the total population as sample of the study. Four (4) research questions were raised to guide the study. The findings revealed that secretarial students in higher institutions require strong English language skills to excel in their roles. These skills encompass both written and verbal communication. Proficient writing abilities are crucial for composing clear and concise business correspondence, reports, and memos. English language skills are imperative in the academic and occupational environments of every secretarial student. English language skills of students are very important in their academic lives, which in turn, lead to their use of same for occupational purposes. Thus, it was recommended that linguistic skills such as writing, speaking, reading, and listening should be considered as a habit by secretarial students and repeatedly carried out to enable students to excel in their academic and professional lives. It was also recommended that in order to design appropriate teaching material that is pertinent for trainees’ academic purposes, syllabus designers ought to consider trainees’ English language skills and sub-skills.
