Abstract

Evaluation of the role of public relation in image and crisis management – case study of Rivers State University. The study sought to evaluate the role of public relation in image and crisis management – a case study of Rivers State University. In order to give perspective to the study, objectives and corresponding research questions were developed. Survey design method approach was adopted by the researcher. This researcher, therefore, collected primary and secondary data, using questionnaires and published literature on the subject matter. The population of the study was 351 which comprised of students and staff of RSU. Data collected through the questionnaire were analyzed using frequency tables. Findings showed the status of public relations activities of Rivers State University (RSU) public relations strategies are being implemented by Rivers State University (RSU) and the extent to which public relations has been able to maintain a cordial relationship between management and students of Rivers State University (RSU). The study concluded that for any society, organization or relationship to be sustained, it depends largely on the extent to which the public relations managers manage an emerging crisis. Over time, changes have occurred in man’s environment as a result of new innovations in technology. The study recommended that the public relations unit in Rivers State University should be expanded into a full department to allow for more staff and working materials, as well as provide regular career training for public relations staff in order to enhance their knowledge in crisis management.
