Description

Abstract

This project is on Factors associated with the mass failure of students in integrated science in secondary schools. Performance of students is poor and the teaching and learning process is still dominated by chalkboard teaching with most integrated science teachers exhibiting a lot of pedagogical limitations due to poor training. Recent researches findings indicate that most integrated science teachers still hold on to the instrumentalists’ view that: integrated science is looked upon as consisting of an unrelated collection of facts, rules, skills and processes to be memorized. The general objective of this study is to know the factors associated with the mass failure of students in integrated science in secondary schools in Gwale local government area. The population of the study came from selected primary schools and it was selected at random to meet the demand of this study, teachers and students in the school mentioned are involved in the process of gathering the data. The researcher used descriptive research methods. From the findings, it was discovered that the poor performance was due to lack of exposure of both teachers and students, lack of the necessary materials required during the process of teaching and learning integrated science, lack of laboratories and laboratory equipment and well-trained laboratory technicians. It is therefore recommended that the government, parents, school administration, and the society at large should work together to ensure that the teaching and learning environment is conducive to the teachers and students for effective learning to take place.
