Fertility, hatchability and embryonic death in a wild guinea fowl eggs in an extensive farm managed in Bali l.g.a.
Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the fertility and hatchability of guinea fowl eggs on a free-range management system sold in Bali market. The study reported for the first time in Bali the reproductive performance of Guinea fowls reared in an extensive production system. The birds were freely reared in the bush with not known mating ratio of males and females for the production of day-old keets. Eggs were purchased from the market and stored for two days at room temperatures between 30– 32º Celsius and selected for incubation in an automated 500 capacity incubator. Data on incubated Guinea fowl eggs for the period of incubation were obtained from the hatchery unit records and analyzed using excel spreadsheet. The percentage of overall fertility, total hatchability and embryonic mortality were 46.7, 38.3 and 20% respectively. Fertility and embryonic mortality were low while, hatchability was high. It is recommended to compare eggs from wild, extensive and intensively managed breeders of guinea fowl eggs. And to improve upon hygiene in egg procession, fumigation and incubator management.
