Harnessing cultural heritage in promoting tourism in Plateau state (case study of Riyom local government area).
Abstract
Riyom“the major gateway of Plateau State”, is endowed with natural attractions which have contributed to transforming the state into being“Nigeria’s Tourist haven” or Home of Peace and Tourism. Besides these natural resources, Riyom Local Government Area is also endowed with vast cultural assets that have not been documented and can be harnessed for cultural tourism. These are festivals/ceremonies and historic sites of the Local Government Area which include festivals such as Mandieng, Vwana, Jama Babu, Gwel Choho, Nzem Berom, Nya, Nnep, Tomm, Wuriu dagareng and historic sites such as Vum, Thal, Shwang, Duk shot: Dakuket, Nnot, Riyom rock, Kahwang, Assop falls and Dagareng. The result of the findings show that the area has more to offer in terms of cultural tourism, and if properly harnessed with the natural assets, the area will become“the nucleus of tourism development in the state”, The researcher recommended some measures such as, adequate publicity and government policies and programmes that can promote cultural tourism development in the area.
