Abstract

Vaccination is the administration of a vaccine to help the immune system develop immunity from a disease. It is a safe, simple and effective way of protecting people against harmful diseases before they come in contact with them.  This research was designed to assess the knowledge and practice of mothers towards children’s vaccination in the infant welfare unit at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin, Kwara State. The aim of the study is to assess the knowledge of mothers towards their children’s vaccination, the practice, and factors that affect their practice towards their childrens’ vaccination. Relevant literatures was reviewed and Health Belief Model was used to review the topic theoretically. An exploratory research design was used to evaluate the research problem, a sample of 83  mothers was chosen from the infant welfare unit using Taro Yamane”s formula. Data was collected using self-developed questionnaire which was subjected to validity and reliability tests, analyzed using SPSS and presented using bar charts and tables which showed that mothers have adequate knowledge on vaccination as  79.5% of respondents heard of immunization from the health centres. The study also revealed that 51.8% know that the importance of vaccination is to protect their children from childhood diseases and about 61.4% of the respondents know the age at which a child is given the certificate of complete routine vaccination. It also showed that the educational background of mothers affects their practice of immunization and most mothers do not know the number of visits that make a full immunization as  38.6% chose twelve times.
