Perception and practice of child abuse among mothers in Yagba east local government, Kogi state.
Abstract
Abuse in all its forms is a daily reality of many Nigerians and only a fraction ever receive help. As much as child abuse is prevalent in the everyday life of a child, it receives little or no attention from society. This is a result of the general assumption that in African society the extended family system always provides love, care and protection to all children. Yet, there are traditional child-rearing practices that adversely affect a child this study was carried out to assess the perception and practice of child abuse among mothers in Yagba East Local Government, Kogi State. Relevant literatures from various authors on child abuse and research on the perception of mothers about child abuse, and mother’s practice of child abuse were reviewed. A descriptive design was used, 80 questionnaires were administered, filled and returned to the researcher. Data collected was analyzed with the use of frequencies, and percentages and are presented using frequency tables and charts. Relationship between variables were determined using Pearson’s chi-square with the level of significance set at 0.05 to determine the level of statistical significance. The findings from the research showed that the mothers identified child abuse as any form of physical, or mental injury, or sexual abuse or exploitation, negligent treatment, maltreatment, or cruelty towards a child by a parent or other adult (including all those that are responsible for the child welfare) (97.5%), as the abuse and neglect that occurs to children under 18 years of age (93.8%), as any kind of action or failure to act that result in harm or possible harm for a child (97.5%), as any failure to attend to necessary emotional or psychological needs (education, medical care, nourishment, shelter and/or clothing) of a child (93.8%)..
