Abstract
Political instability takes its toll on the political, economic and social life of every nation which debares policy implementation and bad governance. This research studied political instability a major hindrance to effective policy implementation and good governance. Using Nigeria 1983– 1999 as a case study. Consequently this research was conducted with the primary aim to examine the effect of political instability on policy implementation, causes of political instability with a view to proffering solution to it and the implication of political instability. At the end of this research It was discovered that political instability is as a result of military incursion in the polity. Corruption, ethnocentricism, bad leadership, religions intolerance, political machination e.t.c. the research was able to identify the implication of political instability which include unemployment and its attendant problem, waste of government resources. Less patriotism by citizens, acrimony etc. conclusively, political instability is no doubt the eventuality of implementing laudable government policies and programmes and also brings about system failure. The research recommended that good governance is exlixir for political stability and effective and efficient execution of government policy and programmes, continuity in laudable government policies and programmes is another contributory factor to political stability etc.. The research used historical method in carrying out the research.
