Abstract

Statistical study of academic performance of students in private polytechnic in south east – case study of Abia state. This project work focuses on the statistical study of the academic performance of private polytechnics. The aim of this study is to check whether the mean ranks of the academic performances of NDI Statistics students of Covenant polytechnic Aba on MTH 111, MTH 112, STA 111 and STA 112 are the same. The data used in this study were obtained from a secondary source. The data collected were analyzed using Friedman’s two-way analysis of variance by ranks, chi-square test and Spearman’s rank correlation test. The results obtained showed that the mean ranks of the academic performances of Statistics students of Covenant Polytechnic Aba on  MTH 111, MTH 112, STA 111 and STA 112 are not the same. The chi-square test revealed that academic performances of NDI Statistics students of Covenant Polytechnic Aba depend on the nature of the course taken. While the Spearman’s rank correlation test indicated that there is no association between the academic performances of NDI Statistics students of Covenant Polytechnic Aba on mathematical and Statistical courses. Based on the findings of this study, the ministry of education should initiate a better strategy that would make the study of Mathematics and Statistics more interesting to students as to improve the process of decision-making and consequently improve the economic development of this great nation.
