Abstract
This project looks at The causes and consequences of electoral malpractices in Ebonyi state, a case study of Afikpo South (Edda) local government area. The sign of the origin of electoral malpractices in Nigerian politics started during the 1964 federal election. This was the first time an election was ever conducted in Nigeria since she became a Republic in 1963. Consequently, Electoral Malpractices have been the major problem facing Nigerian politics. This has brought rigging, victimization, intimidation and violent demonstrations in various parts of the country in protest against the electoral malpractices. The problem is that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) who is to maintain peace and order through its unbiased position became agents for intimidating voters of opposing political parties to the party in power. In this work, we shall appraise the roles of tribalism, monetization of Afikpo South (Edda) Local Government Area from the Pre-colonial era till 2015 general election in particular as our reference guide for analysis. We shall also critically evaluate the roles of elites and the power of incumbency in manipulating tribal and political consciousness in their quest for political power. We shall outline and discuss in detail those factors that are responsible for the causes of electoral malpractices in our political system and suggest the way forward for the eradication of electoral malpractices and all other anti-social practices responsible for undermining our political system.
